How to make Hang Tags for Quilting Yoyos and Buttons

Scrap booking, primitive collections, primitive crafting, collage art, bookmaking, and gift tags...

Hangtags have many uses. They can be used to dress up scrap booking pages or to dress up the scrapbook. They can be used as a canvas for collage art or they can become part of the collage. They can dress up a primitive or folk art item or they become a decorative folk art or primitive item. Although people still use hang tags to dress up gifts, their usefulness goes way beyond gifts.

This page contains photos and instructions for creating one particular kind of hang tag, Yoyo Button Flower Hang Tags.

Supplies

Hang Tags can be made from scraps of fabric, old buttons, left over embroidery thread and craft felt. This is a supply list for our Yoyo Hang tags.

  • Yoyos - if you don't know how to make yoyos, the Projects page has a link to a site containing instructions.
  • Hang Tags - the ones used in these instructions are the large shipping tags (2 3/8" wide by 4 1/2" long). Tea staining Hang Tag Instructions
  • Green Pipe Cleaners sometimes called Chenille Stems

  • Embroidery Thread and Needle
  • Small paintbrush for spreading decoupage glue
  • Decoupage Glue and Fabric Glue. Many people use a glue stick to tack down fabric, but I prefer decoupage glue.

Instructions for Creating Yoyo Button Flower Tags

Choose your materials and Lay out the Design

I always put the pieces together before I begin, so I have a good idea of how my hangtag will look. I have chosen light denim for the background. The fabric is cut 2 3/8" wide and 4" long. I'll use two colors of green felt for the leaves and grass.

Making Craft Felt leaves

The easy way to make the leaves is to cut out a rectangle of felt, put a line of fabric adhesive down the center (Don't go all the way to the top because you want the leave to open up on at the tip.) Fold the felt in half and pinch it. Let the adhesive dry. Leaving the felt folded in half, cut out a half leaf shape. The folded end is at the top in the picture above.

Making Craft Felt Grass

The green felt is cut 2 3/8" wide and about 1" long. Make several snips down along the width of the felt. Don't worry about making them evenly spaced; blades of grass in a lawn aren't all the same size. I take little snips randomly at the top edges to give my "grass" a little more texture.

Gluing Fabric, Felt Leaves & Grass, Pipe Cleaners Stems

I use decoupage glue to attach the fabric to the hangtag. I use a paintbrush to spread the decoupage glue. I put the glue on the hangtag, position the fabric, smooth it out and then paint decoupage glue over the top of the fabric.

I use fabric glue to paste down the grass, leaf, and stem. I put a line of glue about 2/3 up the back of the leaf and a few dots just to hold the leaf open. I like the look of the leaf coming off the tag just a bit.

Sewing on Button with Embroidery Thread

I use some embroidery thread to sew the yoyo onto the tag. To make the sewing a bit easier, I punch holes in the fabric covered tag prior to sewing on the yoyo. For these yoyo flowers, I've used 3 strands each of blue, read and black embroidery thread.

I start my stitch on the front of the tag leaving plenty of embroidery thread for tying at the front. I tie the thread tight at the front and trim the ends so that the flower has a little bit of fluff in the center of the button.

Note: You can put a small dab of fabric glue on the yoyo if you're having trouble holding it in place. Also, if you're worried about the threads coming loose, you can put a very small dot of glue on the knot.

Use for Scrap booking or Gift Tags

Scrapbook or gift, decorative accent or decorative piece...Now it's your choice how you decide to use your hangtag.
